I first took a look at wordpress many years ago and dismissed it as a pure blogging tool, for which at the time I had no need. Fast forward a few years and I found myself with a lot of clients who were specifically after new websites. A number of these were less than five pages and had a basic template design, but wanted to update their own sites without paying me to do it. Ignoring the poor business model I turned to the web to look for good content management systems and found that WordPress had matured to the point where it was not only a feasible choice, but probably the best and most simplest one.

Many designers are familiar with WordPress and can make their designs compatible with it by creating a (or modifying an existing) template. These templates create the ‘look and feel’ of a site, while the site owner can create the content.

For bands specifically, this is handy. You can use an existing template (check out Template Monster) or design your own and have your home page up and running in a very short time. There are also ‘plugins’ available, which allow new and exciting functionality to be available from within WordPress. For example, a gig calendar, or a direct YouTube feed.

As the beginnings of WordPress are based in blogging, this functionality is absolutely easy to integrate into your website.

The best part? It’s all free. You can download WordPress at http://www.wordpress.org for FREE! When you consider a small website used to cost about $1k to develop, and then add your dynamic parts like blogging and calendars, this is a lot more cost effective.
